What is a Shahi Snan?

A Shahi Snan (royal bath, also called Amrit Snan) is a main bathing day of the Simhastha. The akharas of sadhus go to the river in grand processions and bathe first, in a set order; pilgrims bathe after them. Vaishnav akharas bathe at Ramkund in Nashik and Shaiva akharas at Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar.

Tips for snan days

  • Book your stay early and stay within walking distance of the ghat.
  • Start before dawn and agree on a meeting point with your group.
  • Carry water, a copy of your ID and a phone number written on paper.
  • Follow the police and volunteers and stay inside the barricaded bathing areas.

Please do not bring or use these at the ghats and in the river during the holy snan. Police may stop you at the entry points.
